Said to have been born c.1836 in Lambeth, Surrey, but a number of Censuses say Bromsgrove, Worcestershire.

Joseph Edward Alder, 14th of December 1836, Bromsgrove Parish, Worcestershire. Son of Edward and Ann Alder.

Enlistment

Enlisted at London on the 4th of November 1854.

Age: 18.

Height: 5' 7".

Service

Embarked for the Crimea on the 4th of September 1855 and at Balaclava on the 27th.

Embarked for the Crimea on the 4th of September 1855 and arrived in the Crimea at Balaclava as part of a draft of 50 men under the command of Lt. Robert MacNeill on the 29th of September 1855.

Sent to Scutari on the 10th of October 1855. He is shown as being On Duty at Scutari from the 24th of October. He was invalided to England on the 31th of October 1855.

Did not serve in Eupatoria.

Discharge & pension

"Discharged by purchase", payment of 30, from Dublin on the 26th of September 1859.

Served 4 years 190 days.

Conduct and character: "Good."

Not in possession of any Good Conduct badges.

Life after service

Joseph Alder married Jane Angliss (or Dangliss) on November 30th 1858 in the Parish Church of St Paul's Bermondsey, after banns.

Joseph Edward Alder, 22, Bachelor, Soldier 13th Light Dragoons, living in the parish of St Paul's, father Edward Alder, Artist.

Jane Adams Angliss [the entry clarly says "Angliss" but the signature appears to say "Dangliss"], 22, Spinster, also living in St Paul's, father James Edward Angliss, Bricklayer.

Notice he continues to describe himself as a soldier. His father is now an "artist".
