1132, Troop Sergeant Major Charles NORTHCOTT — 13th Light Dragoons

Birth & early life

Enlistment

Enlisted into the 4th Light Dragoons at London on the 24th of June 1841. No Regimental number was allocated as he did not join the regiment from the Depot.

No other enlistment details are shown.

Service

Transferred to the 13th Light Dragoons on the 17th of May 1842 from the Canterbury Depot.

From Private to Corporal: 8th of January 1846.

Corporal to Sergeant: 8th of April 1851.

Appointed to Troop Sergeant Major on the 27th of April 1854.

Died, "of cholera", in Camp, on the 15th of October 1854.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma and Sebastopol.

Lummis and Wynn show him as only being entitled to that for the Alma, but he is also shown on the Sebastopol clasp roll as "Dead".

Death & burial

Died, "of cholera", in Camp, on the 15th of October 1854.

An obituary notice of the time stated "Sergeant Major Chuck [sic] Northcott. 13th L.D. At Sebastopol [sic] of cholera on the 15th of October, age 33."

Northcott's death is mentioned in Albert Mitchell'sMemoirs:

"Our Troop Serjeant Major (he it was who enlisted me at Westminster) seeing me in that state, told me I was killing myself [drinking the local spirits] and that before long they would have to bury me and leave me behind. Poor fellow! He little thought that before that day month I should be employed doing the same thing for himself." [RM]
