Surgeon George ANDERSON — 8th Hussars

Birth & early life

Born in Woodhouse, Dumfriesshire, Scotland.

Graduated, and obtained his Medical Degree from Marischal College, Aberdeen, in 1828.

Service

Assistant Surgeon in the 75th Foot: 12th of June 1835.

Assistant Surgeon in the 17th Lancers: 20th of January 1837.

Surgeon in the 77th Foot: 13th of December 1845.

Staff Surgeon (Second Class): 3rd of October 1848.

Surgeon in the 12th Lancers: 1st of December 1848.

Surgeon in the 8th Hussars: 16th of December 1853.

Surgeon Major, 8th Hussars: 8th of December 1854.

Placed on half-pay: 1st of October 1856.

Returned to full-pay: 7th of July 1857.

Retired on half-pay on the 23rd of January 1861, with the honorary rank of Deputy Inspector of Hospitals.

Campaign service

Surgeon Anderson served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the battles of the Alma, Balaclava, Inkerman and the Siege and fall of Sebastopol. (Medal and Clasps, and the Order of the Medjidie, 5th Class.)

Embarked for the Crimea aboard the H.T. "Wilson Kennedy" on the 2nd of May 1854.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Balaclava, Inkerman and Sebastopol, the Turkish Medal and the Order of the Medjidie, 5th Class.

Served also with the 12th Lancers during the campaign against the Kaffirs in South Africa between 1850-53 and was awarded the medal for this.

Death & burial

Died on the 30th of December 1888 at 54, Albany Street, Edinburgh, Scotland.

Extract from The Scotsman, 4th of January 1889:

"The late Dr. George Anderson, of Woodhouse, Deputy-Inspector General of Army Hospitals, who died at No. 54, Albany Street, Edinburgh on the 30th of December, was well known amongst older military men and by a considerable circle of other friends, by whom he was held in high respect.

A son of the late Revd. George Anderson of Leochel Cushnie, Aberdeenshire, Dr. Anderson, who was born in 1812, was educated at Marischal College, Aberdeen. He was gazetted to the Army Medical Staff in 1835 and he continued in connection with it until 1861, when he retired.

Amongst the regiments he was attached to were the 17th Lancers, 77th Foot, 12th Light Dragoons, and the 8th Hussars. He had served all through the Crimean War and two Cape Wars and he was also in Canada.

For his services he was decorated with a Crimean medal and clasps, the 5th Order of the Medjidie and the Turkish Medal.

He became a Surgeon of the First Class in 1854, and whilst Deputy-Inspector of Hospitals he was the chief Medical man at Edinburgh Castle.

After his retirement from active duty he purchased the estate at Woodhouse, where he has since resided.

His funeral yesterday (the 3rd.) which took place from No. 54 Albany Street, Edinburgh, was attended by a large number of friends from the United Services Club."

From the records of Wariston Cemetery at Edinburgh, he was buried in Section E. Grave Space 36.

According to his death certificate he died from "Cardiac Degeneration, 2 months (Syncope.)", aged 76 years. Described as a "single" man.

His father was George Anderson, Minister of Leochel, Cushnie, and his mother was Margaret, nee Cattanach.

A grand-nephew, Charles George Monro, of Poytzfield, Church Road, Norwood, London, was present at, and the informant of, his death.
