Born in Longley, Yorkshire.

Enlistment

Enlisted at London on the 1st of May 1854.

No other enlistment details apart from his trade as a salesman are shown.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea from Brighton on the 23rd of April 1855.

Discharge & pension

Discharged on the "Reduction of the Regiment" from Dublin on the 21st of March 1857.

Served 1 year 269 days.

Conduct and character: "very bad." Not in possession of any Good Conduct badges.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.

Life after service

[RM: The 1881 Census shows him as a "Office Lab Porter" aged 48, born Halifax living at 59 Cambridge Road, London. He was married to Charlotte, aged 29, born St Lukes, Middlesex. A servant, Rebecca Stubbings, is also shown in the household.]

[CP: The James Baldwin of 1881 was alive in 1891 AND 1901, same wife and even the same Servant, Rebecca Stubbings. This would suggest he cannot have died in 1894, as stated below.]

Death & burial

[RM: His death, aged 60, was registered in the Brentford registration district in the June Quarter of 1894.]
