Birth & early life

Enlistment

Enlisted at London on the 11th of March 1851.

Age: 18.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: None shown.

Service

Sent to the General Depot at Scutari on the 12th of October 1854 and to Abydos Hospital on the 28th of November.

Invalided to England aboard the "City of Norwich" on the 31st of March 1855 and sent to Chichester "on furlo" from the Brighton Depot on the 23rd of May 1855.

Rejoined the regiment in Ireland on its return from the Crimea 1st of June 1856.

Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S.S. "Great Britain" on the 8th of October 1857.

From Private to Corporal: 1st of February 1858.

The July-September 1858 muster rolls show him as being "On Field Service" during this period.

Served at Rajghur and Mungrowlee with Captain William Gordon.

Corporal to Sergeant: 2nd of March 1860.

Re-engaged for a further term of 12 years' service at Secunderbad, India, on the 14th of April 1863.

Reduced to Private by a Regimental Court-martial: 4th of January 1864.

Volunteered to the 18th Hussars on the 30th of November 1864. Regimental No. 1247.

Joined the regiment, with his wife, on the 21st of January 1865.

Transferred, as "Effective Supernumerary", to the Commissariat Department on the 19th of January 1866.

The India Office records show him as "Committing suicide under temporary insanity" at Bangalore on the 11th of December 1866, aged 34 years.

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma and Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.

Death & burial

Committed suicide at Bangalore, India, on the 11th of December 1866.

The India Office records show him as "Committing suicide under temporary insanity" at Bangalore on the 11th of December 1866, aged 34 years. He was buried in St Andrew's (Scotch) Cemetery at Bangalore on the 12th of December by the Revd. H.W. Cooper, M.A. Chaplain. He was then shown as being a Staff-Sergeant in the Commissary Department.
