Birth & early life

Enlistment

Enlisted at Liverpool on the 20th of December 1854.

Age: 21.

Height: 5' 5".

Trade: None shown.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea from Cork on the 16th of July 1855.

At Scutari from the 25th of October — 26th of December 1855.

Tried by a District-Court-martial on the 29th of October 1855 for "Disgraceful conduct. Selling clothing, the property of the Government." Found "Not Guilty".

Sent to the Depot at Canterbury when the regiment went to India, 1st of October 1857.

"Absent", 1st of October — 22nd of November 1857, and posted as a "deserter" from the 22nd of November 1857.

Can find no further trace to March of 1865.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.

Life after service

A man of this name was shown in the 1881 Census Return as living at No, 62, Harwood Street, Blackburn, Lancashire, a Clerk, Treasurer of Co-Op Stores, aged 48, born at Salmsbury, Lancashire with his niece Alice Billington, born in Blackburn, as his Housekeeper.

Joseph Billington, 56, Licensed Victualler, born Lancashire.

Elizabeth Ann 46, born Blackburn.

Also a Servant.

1901 Census

211 Queens Road, Blackburn.

Joseph Billington, 71, retired.

Elizabeth A., 56.

Death & burial

[RM: His death, aged 68, was registered in the Blackburn registration district in the September Quarter of 1901.]
