Birth & early life

Born at Stockport, Cheshire.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Liverpool on the 12th of January 1855.

Age: 19.

Height: 5' 8".

Trade: Boatman.

Appearance: Fresh complexion. Brown eyes. Brown hair.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 20th of June 1855.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from the Chatham Invalid Depot on the 27th of July 1858.

"Has varicose veins of the right leg and tendency to ulceration."

Awarded a pension of 6d. per day for one year "final", from the 6th of July 1858.

Served 3 years 6 months.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 10 months.

Conduct,"good". Not in possession of any Good Conduct badges.

Living in Stockport after discharge.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol.

Not recorded by Lummis and Wynn.

1881 Census

A man of this name is shown in the 1881 Census Returns as living at No. 29 Chorlton on Medlock, a Vanman. aged 44, born at Winsford, Cheshire, with his wife, Jane, aged 37, born at Matlock, Derbyshire and 4 children, aged from 9 years to 2 days old.
