Birth & early life

Born in the parish of St. Pancras, London.

Enlistment

Enlisted at London on the 2nd of August 1831.

Age: 18.

Height: 5' 8".

Trade: Dyer.

Appearance: Fresh complexion. Brown eyes. Dk. brown hair.

Service

Returned from India aboard the "Repulse" on the 27th of March 1842.

Sent to the Depot when the regiment left for the Crimea. 13th of June 1854.

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 20th of June 1855.

Invalided to England aboard the "Subaldah" on the 26th of January 1856.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Chatham Invalid Depot on the 22nd of July 1856, when he travelled to London accompanied by his wife, Elizabeth, and two children.

"Found unfit for further military service. Was invalided home from the Crimea on account of a severe sprain of the left wrist joint. He states that whilst wheeling a barrow when on stable duty in frosty weather when quartered at Cork in January of 1853, he fell.

Since then he has at times, from fear of this cause, been unable to perform his ordinary duties when any exertion was followed by pain."

Served 24 years 270 days.

Conduct: "a good soldier". Iin possession of four Good Conduct badges although convicted by a Regimental Court-martial on the 9th of December 1844 for "absence without leave and striking Private Cole." He was sentenced to 28 days' imprisonment.

Awarded a pension of 1/- per day. To live in Exeter.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol.

The muster roll for the period shows him as "On service in Scinde." From this he could also well have been entitled to the medal for Ghuznee.

Lummis and Wynn state, "Nothing further known."

Life after service

Death & burial

Died in the East London Pension District on the 29th of July 1865.

The St. Catherine's House records show him as dying in the Shoreditch District, aged 52 years, during the July-September quarter of 1865.
