Birth & early life

Born at Birmingham.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Birmingham on the 20th of February 1855.

Age: 19.

Height: 5' 6".

Trade: Boat-builder.

Service

Transferred to the 17th Lancers from Aldershot on the 1st of September 1857. Regimental No. 54.

Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S.S. "Great Britain" on the 8th of October 1857.

Died at Sholapore, India, on the 3rd of August 1858.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal only. (See record of 1941 Samuel Briggs.)

Landed in the Crimea after the 9th of September 1855, but is specially entitled to the Crimean medal in consequence of having served with the Regiment in the Expedition to Eupatoria during the month of October of that same year. Camp Aldershot, 16th November 1857.

The muster rolls for July-September 1858 show him as "On Detachment at Sholapoor" during July and confirm s his date of death in August.

Can find no trace on the Mutiny medal roll.

Not recorded by Lummis and Wynn.

Further information

The India Office records show him as dying of "Febris C.C." at Sholapore on the 3rd of August 1858, aged 23 years. He was buried on the same day by the Revd. J.F. Goldstein, Chaplain.
