Birth & early life

Born in the parish of St. Mary's, Dublin.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Dublin on the 15th of May 1838.

Age: 20 years 11 months.

Height: 5' 8".

Trade: Cabinet-maker.

Fair complexion. Grey eyes. Black hair.

Service

Embarked for the Crimea aboard the H.T. "Mary Anne" on the 15th of April 1854.

At Scutari from the 18th of December 1854 — 27th of February 1855.

Sent to the Depot at Canterbury on the 1st of October 1857.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Chatham Invalid Depot on the 29th of January 1859:

"Unfit for further service. This man suffers from chronic catarrh and general debility — the result of service and privation during the Crimean campaign. Not attributable to vice or mis-conduct."

Served 21 years 6 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 1 year 10 months.

Conduct: "very good".

In possession of two Good Conduct badges. Once entered in the Regimental Defaulters' book. (Confined by order of the Detachment Commander, 2nd-8 of September 1847.) Never tried by Court-martial.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Balaclava, Inkerman and Sebastopol.

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean medal, with four clasps.

He was awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct medal on the 24th of March 1860, with a gratuity of £5. This was after he had left the service.

Life after service

Death & burial

p>Died in the Coventry Pension District on the 31st of July 1861.

The St. Catherine's House records show his death in the Warrington District during the July-September Quarter of 1861. No age at death is shown, this being before it was recorded.

From his death certificate he died at Spencer Street, Leamington, from "Phthisis, Certified", aged 43 years, his occupation being that of a Pensioner from the 8th Royal Irish Hussars.

A Sarah Beckett, of the same address, was present at, and the informant of his death.
