Birth & early life

Born at Clohten, Co. Tipperary

Enlistment

Enlisted at Westminster on the 30th of January 1855.

Age: 19.

Height: 5' 6".

Trade: Labourer.

Appearance: Fresh complexion. Grey eyes. Red hair.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 14th of July 1855.

Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S.S. "Great Britain" on the 8th of October 1857.

Re-engaged at Coventry on the 31st of December 1866 for a further twelve year period of service.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Aldershot on the 15th of February 1876.

"Free, to pension after 21 years' service."

Served 21 years 17 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 9 months.

East Indies, 6 years 4 months.

Aged 40 years on discharge.

Conduct: "very good".

In possession of five Good Conduct badges.

Twice entered in the Regimental Defaulters' book. Never tried by Court-martial.

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol, the Mutiny medal with clasp and the Long Service & Good Conduct medal.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol.

Mutiny medal with clasp for Central India.

Served at Kotah.

Awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct medal as "John Bury" on the 16th of February 1874, with a gratuity of £5.

To live in Camberwell, London.
