Birth & early life

Born at Longford, Ireland.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Ballincollig on the 25th of August 1848.

Age: 17 years 4 months.

Height: 5' 4,"

Trade: None shown.

Appointed to Paymaster's Clerk on the 11th of September 1850, vice No. 112 Samuel Broomfield, who had held the post since the 6th of November 1832 and ranking as a Troop Sgt, Major from the 7th of November 1840, was discharged in the rank of Troop Sergeant Major, "without personal application," vide War Office Authority, dated the 22nd of August 1850. Quite possibly his father, the regiment being at Longford at the time of William Broomfield's birth.)

Reduced to Private from Paymaster's Clerk on the 18th of March 1854.

Service

Embarked for the Crimea aboard the H.T. "Shooting Star" on the 24th of April 1854.

From Private to Probationary Orderly Room Clerk on the 2nd of July 1855.

Appointed to the rank of Troop Sergeant Major (as Orderly Room Clerk) on the 18th of December 1855.

Embarked for India aboard the S. S. "Great Britain" on the 8th of October 1857.

Discharge & pension

Discharged, "by purchase", in the East Indies on the 9th of December 1859.

Served 11 years 106 days.

Conduct: "good".

In possession of one Good Conduct badge.

He is shown on the muster roll as being discharged in the rank of Private This is confirmed by the "Discharge by Purchase" book which records his Christian name as "Warner" only. There is nothing to show why this should be so except that the rank he held was not considered substantive until the holder had been in a Staff post for a minimum of seven years.

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Inkerman and Sebastopol.

Mutiny medal with clasp for Central India.

His (presumed) father, No. 112 T.S.M. Samuel Lightbody Broomfield, was born at Rosenallis, Co. Queen's, Ireland, and had enlisted at Birr, Co. King's, on the 5th of July 1823 at the age of 18 years. 5' 8" in height, with a sallow complexion, hazel eyes and brown hair. His trade was that of a farmer before enlisting. He was promoted from Private to Paymaster's Clerk (as Sergeant) on the 6th of November 1825. (His later rank of T.S.M. came after serving seven years in that position.) Served a total of 27 years 55 days. He was discharged from Brighton Barracks on the 24th of August 1850 at the age of 48 years. The medical report was as follows: "Unfit for further service. I certify that I have examined T.S.M. Samuel Broomfield and find that he labours under impaired strength and activity produced by age and length of service — but in all other respects he is in good health. Conduct and character: "Has been very good".
