Birth & early life

Born at Manchester.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Manchester by the 7th for the 8th Hussars on the 8th of October 1854.

Age: 21.

Height: 5' 6".

Trade: Book-keeper.

Embarked on the 24th of May 1855 and joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 15th of June 1855.

Sent to Scutari on the 7th of July 1855 and invalided to England on the 7th of September.

From Private to Corporal: 17th of September 1857.

Embarked for India aboard the S.S. "Great Britain" on the 8th of October 1857.

Corporal to Sergeant: 1st of October 1857.

Confined, and reduced to Private by a Regimental Court-martial on the 30th of January 1858.

Died at Nusserabad, India, on the 31st of August 1859.

Next of kin: Cousin, Alice Lees, living No. 16 Market Place, Burton.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol.

Mutiny medal with clasp for Central India.

Lummis and Wynn state, "Not on medal roll," but he is to be found on the Sebastopol clasp list.

Death & burial

The India office records show him as dying of "Acute hepatitis" at Nusserabad on the 31st of August 1859, aged 26 years. Buried on the 1st of September by "The Officers Attending."
