1570 John BURTON — 8th Hussars

Birth & early life

Born at Aston, Birmingham.

Originally enlisted into the 1st Warwickshire Militia on the 15th of October 1852.

Attested by the 7th for the 8th Hussars at Warwick on the 8th of January 1855.

Age: 19.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: Tinplate-worker.

Dark complexion. Hazel eyes. Brown hair.

Service

Embarked for the Crimea on the 24th of May 1854 and joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 15th of June.

Confined from the 19th of September 1855. Tried by a Regimental Court-martial on the 21st of September and sentenced to 50 lashes and stoppage of 1d. per day pay for 30 days.

Discharge & pension

Discharged, "invalided," from Dundalk Barracks on the 24th of January 1857.

"Reduction of the Army and being found unfit for the service. Is unfit in consequence of varicose veins of the legs, the result of pre-disposition, which has been aggravated by his military service."

Aged 21 years 1 month on discharge.

Served 2 years 46 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 10 months.

Conduct: "good". Not in possession of any Good Conduct badges.

Once tried by Court-martial.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol.

He was granted a pension of 6d. per day for six months, but he was still trying to claim a further pension up to the 9th of April 1886.

To live at No 63 Duke Street, Birmingham.

Not recorded by Lummis and Wynn.
