Birth & early years

Born in Bishopsgate, London.

1841 Census

Tower Hamlets, St Leonard, Shoreditch.

A Joseph Cutmore, aged 7, born London, was living with his parents, Joseph and Mary, and sister Maria.

1851 Census

10, Great Bell Alley, St Stephen, Coleman Street, London.

Four people are shown, including Joseph Cutmore. His father's trade was given as Tailor.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Westminster on the 23rd of June 1854.

Age: 18 years 10 months.

Height: 5' 6".

Trade: Labourer.

Features: Fresh complexion. Grey eyes. Brown hair.

Service, discharge & pension

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 1st of August 1855.

Sent to Scutari on the 10th of October 1855. He is later shown on a nominal roll of men of the Regiment made out at the Cavalry Depot, Scutari, on the 9th of November 1855 as being In Hospital there from the 24th of October.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Cahir on the 15th of November 1856, a result of:

"Reduction of the Army and not likely to become efficient — This man has passed a great deal of time in hospital since joining the Army and suffers from an ulcer on the lower part of the left leg which he states came on of itself about a year ago. The ulcer is dependent upon a varicose condition of the vein and is itself no sooner healed than it breaks out again. He has passed a great deal of his time in hospital since joining the Army. Able to earn his own living."

Served 2 years 147 days. In Turkey and the Crimea: 1 year.

Conduct: "good". Not in possession of any Good Conduct badges.

Awarded a pension of 6d. per day for six months.

To live in London after discharge.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.

Not recorded by Lummis and Wynn.

The marriage of Joseph Cutmore and Ellen McCarthy was registered in June Quarter 1858 at Shoreditch.

1871 Census

3, New Union Street, St Giles without Cripplegate, London.

Ellen Cutmore, 46, Servant, born Ireland.

1881 Census

No. 5 Langthorne Court, Coleman Street,in the parish of St. Stephens, London

Joseph Cutmore, Porter, aged 46, born in London City, Middlesex, with his wife, Ellen, aged 55, born in Cork, Ireland.

1901 Census

RM: The 1901 Census shows him aged 67, born Bishopsgate, London. His occupation is given as "Carman", living in Middlesex (no district shown). Recorded as a Patient in the City of London Union. (A total of 80 staff and 350 patients are recorded.)

Death registered

Ellen Cutmore, aged 71, in the December Quarter 1898 at Mile End.

Death & burial

His death, aged 69, is registered in the Poplar registration district of London in the September quarter of 1902.
