Born in Sussex. He was christened in the church of St. John the Baptist at Wivelsfield on the 10th of August 1823, the son of Samuel and Dinah (Diana?) Carter, nee Stepney.

"Confined" from the 17th of September 1846 and reduced to Private by a Regimental Court-martial on the 26th of September.
Is shown in the muster rolls as "To Lord Lucan as servant. 14th of April 1854."
Travelled out to the Crimea with the 17th Lancers aboard the "Ripon" and the "Jason" from the 26th of April and the 23rd of June 1854, being shown as "Attached to Officer on the Staff of Lord Lucan..." Rejoined his own Corps on the 1st of July.
At Varna on the 20th of September 1854, but no date is shown for when he joined the regiment again in the Crimea proper.
From Private to Corporal: 27th of July 1854.
Died at Scutari on the 9th of December 1855. No details shown of any next-of-kin.
Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Balaclava, Inkerman and Sebastopol,
Lummis and Wynn show this man as being entitled to the clasp for the Alma also, but this could not have been so as he was at Varna and the medal roll does not credit him with it.
