Birth & early life

Born at Marylebone, London.

Enlistment

Enlisted into the 15th Hussars at Westminster on the 15th of August 1846. Regimental No. 1445.

Age: 18.

Height: 5' 6".

Trade: Labourer.

Appearance: Fresh complexion. Hazel eyes. Brown hair.

Service

Transferred to the 4th Hussars on the 1st of November 1854.

Memo. from the Horse Guards to the Officer Commanding the Cavalry Depot at Brighton and dated the 6th of December 1854:

Reference to furlough for Alfred Collins, 4th L.D.

The General Commanding-in-Chief will not object to a short furlough being granted to this soldier taking into consideration the fact of his being absent eight years in India with the 15th Hussars, should the Officer Commanding recommend the same.

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 25th of May 1855.

Invalided to England on the 12th of March 1856.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Chatham Invalid Depot on the 30th of December 1856.

"Reduction of the Army and being unfit for further service. Suffers from chronic disease of the liver — contracted whilst serving in India with the 15th Hussars."

Served 10 years 147 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 9 months.

East Indies, 6 years.

Conduct: "a good soldier". Not in possession of any Good Conduct badges.

Aged 29 years 6 months on discharge.

Granted a pension of 6d. per day for 3 years.

Living in the West London Pension District after discharge.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol.

Not recorded by Lummis and Wynn.
