1505 George COOKE — 8th Hussars

Birth & early life

Born at Leeds.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Leeds by the 7th Hussars for the 8th on the 26th of December 1854. Was a volunteer from the 2nd. West Yorks Militia.

Age: 19 years 7 months.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: Labourer.

Appearance: Fresh complexion. Grey eyes. Lt. brown hair.

Service

Embarked on the 24th of May and joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 13th of June 1855.

Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S.S. "Great Britain" on the 8th of October 1857.

Transferred to the 19th Hussars on the 1st of November 1863. Regimental No. 717.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Netley Hospital on the 20th of August 1867, as:

"Unfit for further service. Has Varicocele — the disease is the result of climate. At present his health is good and not likely to prevent his contributing to his own livelihood."

Served 11 years 297 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea 1 year

In India: 8 years 10 months.

Conduct: "good".

In possession of two Good Conduct badges.

Three times entered in the Regimental Defaulter's book. Never tried by Court martial.

Aged 30 years 2 months on discharge.

To live at Darlington.

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean medal with one clasp, and the Mutiny medal with one clasp.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol.
