Birth & early life

Born in Hornsey, London.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Westminster on the 19th of July 1854.

Age: 19.

Height: 5' 10".

Trade: Gardener.

Appearance: Fresh complexion. Hazel eyes. Dk. brown hair.

Service

Tried by a District Court-martial on the 20th of September 1855 for "being drunk on duty, under arms."

Given 50 lashes.

From Private to Corporal: 1st of May 1858

Tried by a Regimental Court-martial on the 5th of January 1859 for "being drunk in barracks" and reduced to Private.

Discharge & pension

Discharged for Chatham Invalid Depot on the 7th of August 1859, as:

"Medically unfit from ulcer to left leg. This man is suffering from an indolent ulcer on the inner part of the left leg. The result of an accident whilst on duty at Belfast in 1856.

The least exertion causes the ulcer to break out and he is quite unfit for military service."

Served 4 years 305 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 4 months.

Conduct: "good". Not in the possession of any Good Conduct badges.

Aged 24 years on discharge.

To live at Hornsey, London.

Awarded a pension of 6d. per day for 15 months.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol.

Documents confirm the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol, but although

Lummis and Wynn state, "Not on medal roll", he is to be found on the Sebastopol clasp roll.
