Birth & early life

Born in Belfast, Co. Antrim.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Liverpool on the 25th of August 1854.

Age: 21.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: Clerk.

Appearance: Fair complexion. Grey eyes. Lt. brown hair.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 29th of April 1855.

At Scutari Cavalry Depot from the 26th of July 1855 and sent to England on the 25th of August.

Tried by a District Court-martial on the 25th of September 1855 for "being drunk on duty under arms, and sentenced to 25 lashes.

Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S.S. "Great Britain" on the 8th of October 1857.

From Private to Corporal: 18th of March 1860.

Corporal to Sergeant: 1st of November 1863.

Confined, 16th-17th and reduced to Private by a Regimental Court-martial on the 18th of December 1863.

From Private to Corporal: 13th of December 1865.

He was re-engaged for 12 years further service at Birmingham on the 5th of September 1866.

Confined, 12th-15th and reduced to Private by a Regimental Court-martial on the 14th of April 1867,

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Aldershot on the 30th of September 1875.

Conduct: "good".

In possession of four Good Conduct badges.

Five times entered in the Regimental Defaulter's book. Three times tried by Court-martial.

"Own request, free to pension after 21 years' service."

Served 21 years 234 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 285 days

In India: 3 years 100 days.

He was awarded a pension of 11d. per day. (His pension was increased to 19d. per day from the 9th of April 1904.)

To live at Sandhurst after discharge.

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean medal, with clasp for Sebastopol, Turkish Medal and the Mutiny medal with clasp for Central India.

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol.

Mutiny medal with clasp for Central India.

Not recorded by Lummis and Wynn.
