Enlisted at Limerick om the 18th of January 1847.

Embarked for the Crimea aboard the HT "Shooting Star" on the 25th of April 1854.
Sent to Scutari on the 26th of September and rejoined the regiment on the 29th of December 1854.
Tried by a District Court-martial on the 23rd of June 1855 for "being found asleep, on his post". Awarded 50 lashes, but this sentence was remitted, and he was confined 23rd-28th of June.
Tried by a District Court-martial on the 8th of September 1855 for "Disgraceful Conduct: making away with a great-coat."
He was given 50 lashes and awarded stoppage of 3d. per day for 3 months. He also forfeited eight years 230 days previous service by this conviction. But this sentence was remitted by a War Office letter dated the 22nd of August 1863.
Travelled overland to India with officers of the regiment in 1857.
