Private Joseph FENTON — 1762, 11th Hussars

Birth & early life

Born in Marylebone, London.

Enlisted into the 15th Hussars at London on the 15th of October 1851, regimental no. 1697.

Age: 19.

Height: 5' 6".

Trade: Servant.

Appearance: Fresh complexion. Grey eyes. Lt. brown hair.

Service

Transferred to the 11th Hussars on the 10th of September 1854.

From Private to Corporal: 10th of September 1857.

Tried by a Regimental Court-martial for "absence", reduced to Private and imprisoned 19th — 30th of April 1858.

From Private to Corporal: 14th of October 1860.

Tried by a Regimental Court-martial for "disobedience of orders", reduced to Private, and imprisoned 4th-9th of January 1861.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Dublin on the 28th of March 1862, as

"Has been suffering since September of 1860 from an injury to his right knee from Penisitis — the result of a fall over his own bed at night and much aggravated by foot drill whilst on Provost Duty at Manchester. This renders him unfit for riding and marching and therefore, inefficient for the duties of a soldier."

Service to count, 10 years 148 days. Not in possession of any Good Conduct badges.

To live at No. 17 Charles Street, Manchester Gardens, London, after discharge.

Appeared before a Medical Board on the 8th of November 1864 and was then granted 6d. per day pension, "conditional", to the 28th of November 1865. This was later renewed for one further year with the proviso, "Not to be renewed". He appeared before a Board again, however, and was granted a further 6d. per day, "conditional", but was finally refused any further pension on the 12th of November 1867.

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol and the Turkish medal.
