Birth & early life

Born at Ashton-under-Lyne, c.1827.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Helm [PB: Hulme?] Barracks, Manchester, on the 3rd of February 1847.

Age: 20.

Height: 5' 8".

Trade: Weaver.

Service

From Private to Corporal: 9th of May 1854.

Killed in action at Balaclava.

Next of kin: Father, John France, living in Lancaster.

Medals

Entitled (according to the medal rolls) to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma and Sebastopol only, but he was obviously entitled to Balaclava as well.

The medal roll does not credit him with the clasp for Balaclava, but he is shown on the separate Alma/Inkerman roll as being: "Killed in action. 25th October 1854" and "WO 5/2/57" Neither is there the usual "B" (for Balaclava entitlement) recorded.
