1686, Private James FITZGERALD — 13th Light Dragoons

Birth & early life

Born in Chelsea, London, c.1832.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Westminster on the 27th of November 1854.

Age: 22.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: Carpenter.

Features: Fresh complexion. Hazel eyes. Brown hair.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 1st of August 1855.

He is shown on a nominal roll of men of the regiment at the Cavalry Depot, Scutari, made out on the 9th of November 1855, as being On Duty there from the 24th of October. From this he did not serve in Eupatoria with the regiment.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Cahir on the 15th of November 1856, a consequence of:

"Reduction of the Army and not likely to become efficient — Suffers from varicose veins of both legs, but chiefly in the left. The pain from this is very severe, so that he is unfit for the duties of a dragoon. I think his disease is the result of constitutional infirmity by pre-disposition and by his riding as a dragoon. Able to earn his living."

Served 1 year 352 days. In Turkey and the Crimea, 1 year.

Conduct: "good". Not in possession of any Good Conduct badges.

Awarded a pension of 6d. per day for 6 months, to live in London.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol.

Not recorded by Lummis and Wynn.
