Birth & early life

Born c.1816 at Beccles, Suffolk, and was christened at Warlingham, Suffolk, on the 7th of January 1816, the son of Robert Flowers and his wife, Sussanah, nee White.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Coventry on the 2nd of November 1837.

Age: 21.

Height: 5' 8".

Trade: Iron-founder.

Service

Killed in action at Balaclava, 25th of October 1854.

Rode with No. 4 Troop (T.S.M. O'Hara). See copy of the Troop muster roll in the 17th Lancer "Scrapbook".

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Balaclava, Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.

Commemorations

Death & burial

Killed in action at Balaclava, 25th of October 1854.

Next of kin: Wife, Elizabeth Flowers, with the regiment in the Crimea.

Further information

Two of his daughters, Mary Elizabeth (12 years) and Susan Sophia (8), entered the Royal Victoria Patriotic Asylum for Girls, Wandsworth, on the 10th June 1858. Their mother was named as Elizabeth Flowers, living in London.

A wreath inscribed "From a comrade's son, George Flowers" was among those at the funeral of Tpt. Major Martin Landfried, 17th Lancers at Hove in 1902.
