Birth & early life

Born at Halifax on the 2nd of October 1824.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Leeds on the 1st of February 1843.

Age: 18.

Height: 5' 8".

Trade: Butcher.

Features: Fair complexion. Hazel eyes. Lt. brown hair.

Service [1]

Imprisoned for "absence" from the 26th of July — 27th of August 1844, and again from the 11th of February — 27th of March 1846, for the same offence.

At Varna during October-December of 1854.

Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S.S. "Great Britain" on the 8th of October 1857.

The musters for July-September of 1858 show no particular service movement during the whole of this period.

A Board to consider his discharge following his request under the Royal Warrant of the 1st of April 1848 (and becoming eligible for a deferred pension upon his reaching the age of 50 years) sat at Morar, India, on the 30th of September 1859.

On passage from India to England from the 10th of December 1859, at the Maidstone Depot from the 12th of April 1860.

Discharged from the Maidstone Depot "Free, at his own request" on the 19th of April 1860.

Served 16 years 105 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 2 years

In India: 2 year 6 months.

Conduct "good". in possession of two Good Conduct badges.

To live in Halifax.

A note on his documents in pencil states "Enlisted in 1st Dragoon Guards" but no date or other information is given.

Service [2]

Re-enlisted into the 1st Dragoon Guards at Westminster on the 30th of April 1860. Regimental No. 483. Age: 35 years 7 months.

Former service in the 17th Lancers allowed to reckon towards pension by War Office Authority dated the 28th of May 1861.

Discharge & pension [2]

Discharged from Chatham Invalid Depot on the 26th of November 1867, as "Unfit for further service. Suffers from chronic laryngitis and pulmonary disease. Caused by constitutional infirmity and is the result of military service."

Conduct "very good."

In possession of two Good Conduct badges,

Never entered in the Regimental Defaulter's book or tried by Court-martial in this regiment.

Served 23 years 305 days.

To live in Halifax, Yorkshire.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.

Can find no trace on the Mutiny medal roll.

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.
