Born in Bombay Province, India, c.1838.
Born at Kirkee on the 25th of August 1853 [1838?] and baptised there on the 9th of September 1838 by the Revd. A, Goode. He was the son of Farrier-Major Robert Field of the 4th L.D. and his wife, Anne. They had been married at Kirkee on the 10th of November 1837 by the Rev. A. Goode. She was the widow of the late Farrier-Major Hopley of the 4th Light Dragooms. A daughter born to her and her former husband died at Kirkee on the 11th of June 1837, aged 11 months. The witnesses at the marriage of his father and mother were Edward and Eliza Hopley, the latter having to make her mark.
Two of his brothers, Robert and Edward, were both educated at the Royal Military Asylum at Chelsea, the former entering on the 24th of February 1852, aged 6 years and 6 months and enlisting into the 4th Light Dragoons. on the 30th of September 1859, but purchased his discharge on the 7th of July 1871. The latter, who entered the Asylum on the 18th of December 1854, at the age of 6 years 11 months, died there on the 8th of April 1862. Both parents, Robert and Anne Field, were shown as "Dead" at the time of their entry.
Enlisted at Dublin from the Royal Hibernian School on the 19th of September 1853.

Joined the regiment in the Crimea after the 1st of June 1855.
A nominal roll of men of the regiment at the Cavalry Depot, Scutari, made out on the 9th of November 1855, shows him as being On Duty there from the 4th of November.
From Private to Tptr. 9th of March 1856.
Deserted from Dublin on the 29th of February 1861.
Can find no further trace to 1879.
Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol.
