1488, Private George FISHER — 4th Light Dragoons

Birth & early life

Born at Hillingdon, near Uxbridge, Middlesex, c.1831.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Uxbridge on the 29th of May 1851.

Age: 20 years 4 months.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: Servant.

Appearance: Fresh complexion. Grey eyes. Brown hair.

Service

Served 23 years 224 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 1 year 10 months.

Tried by a District Court-martial for "desertion" on the 17th of May 1852.

Sentenced to 84 days' imprisonment and also to forfeit 315 days former service, but this was not restored until the 10th of March 1858 by War Office Order.

Sir, — I have the honour to request that you be pleased to forward to this Department the record of service of the soldier named in the margin (1488 Private George Fisher) his name having been submitted by the Officer Commanding the regiment for the restoration of his forfeited service

From Private to Corporal: 17th of April 1855.

Corporal to Sergeant: 24th of July 1857.

Confined for "absence" from the 2-6 of February and reduced to Private by a Regimental Court-martial on the 7th of February 1859.

From Private to Corporal: 11th of September 1860.

Corporal to Sergeant: 24th of July 1862.,

Re-engaged for a further 12 years' service on the 30th of September 1863.

Had his leg fractured in April of 1864. Not stated how.

Next of kin: Wife, Mary Ann Fisher. Is shown on the Regimental "Married roll" from the 16th of May 1862.

1871 Census

At the time of the 1871 Census he was serving at the Canterbury Depot. He was shown as aged 45 years, born at Rugby. His wife, Mary Ann, 31, was born at Market Harborough. There were two children at this time: Elizabeth M.A., 6, and Hannah, 2 years.

"In confinement," awaiting trial, 13th-19th of May 1867. Tried by a Regimental Court-martial and reduced to Private on the 20th of May 1867.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Canterbury on the 20th of May 1875, at "Own request, after 23 years' service."

Served 23 years 224 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 1 year 10 months.

Conduct: "very good".

In possession of five Good Conduct badges.

Seven times entered in the Regimental Defaulter's book. Three times tried by Court-martial.

Awarded a pension of 1/0d. per day.

Aged 44 years on discharge.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Balaclava, Inkerman and Sebastopol.

Commemorations

Life after service

Intended to live at Winston Street, Uxbridge, after discharge, but he was living in Canterbury in 1875.
