Birth & early life

Born c.1834.

Enlistment

Enlisted as "Alfred Short" at Hampton Court on the 24th of January 1852.

There is no documented reason for his apparent change of name, merely the underlining of his correct surname in red ink and the word "Short". See Recruits, June Pay List.

Age: 18.

Height: 5' 8".

Trade: Horse-dresser.

Service

Sent to Scutari on the 27th of October 1854.

Rejoined the regiment on the 14th of January 1855.

From Private to Corporal: 11th of June 1863.

Discharge & pension

Discharged, "time expired", from Dublin on the 30th of January 1864.

Served 12 years 5 days.

Conduct and character: "good". Is in possession of two Good Conduct badges.

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol.
