Birth & early life

Born at Monaghan, Ireland, c.1825.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Dublin on the 28th of July 1843.

Age: 18.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: Weaver.

Service

Embarked for the Crimea aboard the H. T. "Wilson Kennedy" on the 8th of October 1857.

Served with Lord Raglan's Escort Troop during 1855.

Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S. S. "Great Britain" on the 8th of October 1857.

He died at Aldershot on the 29th of November 1866. He was attached to the 17th Lancers at this time.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Inkerman and Sebastopol.

Mutiny medal with clasp for Central India.

He was awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct medal on the 26th of September 1866.

Served at Kotah and Gwalior.

The Returned Medal book states: "Crimean, Mutiny, Turkish and Long Service & Good Conduct medals returned to the Mint. No trace of issue."

Life after service

Death & burial

He died at Aldershot on the 29th of November 1866. He was attached to the 17th Lancers at this time.

Next of kin: Mother, Naomi Townsend, living in Drogheda, Ireland.

He left no will, his "credits" being £10/1/2d, as well as £9/18/2d in the Regimental Savings Bank.
