Birth & early life

Born in the parish of St. Luke's, London, c.1832.

Enlistment

Enlisted at London on the 22nd of December 1854.

Age: 22.

Height: 5' 8".

Trade: Hearth-rug maker.

Appearance: Sallow complexion. Grey eyes. Brown hair.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 25th of May 1855.

In the Camp Hospital during June and July of 1855.

Transferred to the 4th Bn of the Military Train on the 13th of October 1856. Regimental No. 639.

Transferred to the 5th Bn. on the 5th of April 1857 and promoted to Corporal on the 7th of April 1857.

Reduced to Private on the 16th of May of that same year.

From Private to Corporal: on the 7th of October 1860, but was reduced to Private by a Regimental Court-martial for "drunkenness" on the 7th of April 1858.

To Shoeing-Smith from Private on the 7th of October 1860 but reverted to Private on the 16th of April 1861.

Appointed to Farrier Sergeant on the 20th of September 1865.

Re-engaged for 12 years' further service on the 27th of November 1866.

Transferred to the A.S. Corps on the disbandment of the Military Train on the 18th of February 1870. Regimental No. 150.

Appointed to 3rd Class Sergeant on the 1st of March 1870.

Served in the Transport Branch.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Aldershot on the 25th of January 1876 as "Free, with pension after 21 years service".

Served 21 years 26 days. In the Crimea. 213 days.

Conduct: "good". In possession of two Good Conduct badges when promoted and would now have had five.

Nine times entered in the Regimental Defaulter's book. Twice tried by Court-martial.

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol.

Named as "Garrod" in the Military Train musters.

To live at 1, Spencer Place, Victoria Street, London, after discharge.

Next of kin: Wife, Frances Garrard. Shown on the Regimental "Married roll" from the 1st of December 1869.

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.

A man named as Robert Gerrard, aged 48, was shown in the 1881 Census as la Farrier, born in St. Luke's Parish. Chelsea. London, living with his wife, Caroline (possibly his second), 36, born at Berney, Sussex, and one son, Robert W., 14, a Hairdresser, born at Aldershot, Hampshire.
