1805, Private George GREENING — 13th Light Dragoons

Birth & early life

Born c.1835 at Dorchester, Dorset, the son of Charles Greening, a servant, of West Walk, Dorchester, and his wife, Ann.

1841 Census

Liberty of Powerstock, Dorset.

George Greening is shown as one of 7 children (aged 2 — 15), born to Robert Greening, Agricultural Labourer, and Mary Greening.

1851 Census

Pinap House, Powerstock, Dorset.

George, 15, Agricultural Labourer, eldest of four at home, was living with his widowed mother Mary, born Charminster.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Dorchester on the 28th of February 1855.

Age: 21 years 6 months.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: Labourer.

Sallow complexion. Hazel eyes. Brown hair.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 3rd of August 1855.

Shown on a nominal roll of men of the regiment at the Cavalry Depot, Scutari, made out on the 9th of November 1855, as being On Duty there from the 24th of October.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Cahir on the 15th of November 1856:

Reduction of the Army and not likely to become efficient. Previous to enlisting this man suffered a fracture of the right femur just above the knee. The right leg is now three-quarters of an inch shorter than the other and renders him inefficient and awkward, as a dragoon. His military service has in no way been injurious to him. Fit to earn his own livelihood.

Served 1 year 261 days. In Turkey and the Crimea, 9 months.

Conduct: "good". Not in possession of any Good Conduct badges.

Aged 23 years on discharge.

Awarded a pension of 6d. per day for three months, "final".

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol.

Not recorded by Lummis and Wynn.

George Greening, Agricultural Labourer, aged 49, born at Charminster, Dorset, was living with his wife, Mary, aged 47, born at West Compton, Devon, and six children, aged from 22 to 6 years.
