891, Private James GOGERTY — 17th Lancers

Birth & early life

Born at Dorniskin, near Lurgan Green, Co. Louth, c.1827.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Dundalk on the 28th of December 1846.

Age: 19.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: Labourer.

Features: Fresh complexion. Grey eyes. Brown hair.

Service

Tried by a Regimental Court-martial on the 26th of May 1854 for "being drunk on duty" and sentenced to 50 lashes, 56 days imprisonment, and stoppage of pay of 1d. per day for 30 days. The corporal punishment and the imprisonment were remitted.

Tried by a District Court-martial on the 27th of July 1855 for "Disrespectful and insubordinate language to a superior". Given 50 lashes.

Discharge and pension

Discharged from Dublin on the 30th of April 1857, as:

"Quite unfit for the duties of a soldier from varicose veins in his legs. Contracted in the service and caused by his military duties. Not aggravated by vice or mis-conduct. Conduct in hospital — 'good'."

Served 10 years 105 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 2 years.

Conduct and character: "Bad."

Not in possession of any Good Conduct badges.

Twice tried by Court-martial.

Awarded a pension of 6d. per day for eighteen months, but this was later made "permanent".

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma and Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.

Commemorations

Life after service

James Gogerty was living in the Drogheda District for two years upon discharge, then emigrated to Sydney, Australia, in 1863.
