1684, Private George GIBSON — 4th Light Dragoons

Birth & early life

Born at Brompton, London, c.1833.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Westminster on the 11th of December 1854.

Age: 20 years 10 months.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: Servant.

Appearance: Fresh complexion. Hazel eyes. Brown hair.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 25th of May 1855.

A nominal roll of men of the regiment at the Cavalry Depot, Scutari, on the 9th of November 1855 shows him as being On Duty there from the 24th of October.

Re-engaged at Edinburgh on the 12th of December 1866 for a further 12 years' service.

Embarked for India aboard the "Serapia" from Portsmouth on the 15th of October 1867.

Invalided to England from Rawalpindi (via Bombay) on the 11th of February and embarking on the 23rd of March was at Canterbury from Netley Hospital on the 27th of April 1874.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Canterbury on the 3rd of May 1876.

"Own request, free to pension after 21 years' service."

Served 21 years 121 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 357 days

In India: 6 years 195 days.

Aged 46 years 8 months on discharge.

Conduct: "very good".

In possession of five Good Conduct badges.

Never tried by Court-martial.

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean medal, clasp for Sebastopol, the Turkish Medal and the Long service and Good conduct medal.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol.

He was awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct medal, with a gratuity of £5, on the 29th of March 1873.

Not recorded by Lummis and Wynn.
