A letter was sent to his parents from the Horse Guards on the 7th of May 1855:
The General Commanding-in-Chief has decided that, under the present emergencies of the service, Private Hugh Gibson cannot be permitted his discharge from the 4th Light Dragoons, cavalry recruits being so difficult to obtain.
Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 14th of June 1855.
Discharged, "by purchase", from Brighton on the 24th of November 1856.
Conduct and character: "good". Not in possession of any Good Conduct badges.
Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol,
