Birth & early life

Born at Kilnelly, near Birr, Co. King's.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Dublin into the 41st Foot on the 19th of March 1844. No Regimental number was allocated as he did not join a battalion from the Depot.

Age: 18 years 9 months.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: Clerk.

Appearance: Fresh complexion. Grey eye. Brown hair.

Service

Transferred to the 4th Light Dragoons on the 1st of August 1847.

Transferred to the 18th Hussars on the 1st of March 1858. Regimental No. 364.

From Private to Corporal: 1st of April 1858.

Corporal to Sergeant: 1st of June 1858.

Tried by a Regimental Court-martial on the 7th of May 1860 and reduced to Private for "being drunk."

From Private to Corporal: 1st of September 1866.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Canterbury on the 4th of May 1869.

"Own request, free to pension after 25 years' service."

Conduct: "very good".

In possession of five Good Conduct badges.

Three times entered in the Regimental Defaulter's book. Once tried by Court-martial.

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean medal with clasps for A.I. and S., and the Turkish medal.

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Inkerman and Sebastopol.
