1206, Henry GOULD — 4th Light Dragoons

Birth & early life

Born c.1824 at Bishop's Tawton, Devonshire, the son of Henry Gould and his wife, Mary Ann and one of ten children in the family. The 1841 Census shows his father as a Carpenter and he as 15 years of age, an "Apprentice Carpenter", possibly apprenticed to his father.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Exeter on the 29th of December 1843.

Age: 19 years 9 months.

Height: 5' 9".

Trade: Carpenter.

Appearance: Fresh complexion. Grey eyes. Brown hair.

Service

At the "Sick Horse Depot" on the 5th of November 1854.

At Scutari from the 4th of April — 11th of May 1855.

He was left at Scutari as servant to the Assistant Quarter-Master General George Mayow and rejoined the regiment on the 2nd of August 1856.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Canterbury on the 21st of June 1868.

"Free, at own request, after 24 years' service."

Served 24 years 24 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 1 year 10 months.

Conduct: "very good".

In possession of five Good Conduct badges.

Seven times entered in the Regimental Defaulter's book. Never tried by Court-martial.

Awarded a pension of 13d. per day.

To live, c/o "The Post Office", Barnstaple, but he was living in South London in 1869.

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Balaclava, and Sebastopol, the Turkish medal and the Long Service & Good Conduct medal with a gratuity of £5.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Balaclava and Sebastopol.

Awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct medal on the 11th of May 1866.

His group of medals is known to be in an English collection. (1978.)

Life after service

1881 Census

98, New North Road, Shoreditch, London.

The 1881 Census shows him as a Master Steam Mill Wood Sawyer, aged 56, born at Exeter, with his wife, Charlotte J., 54, born at Thetford, Norfolk.
