Born at Dewsbury, Yorkshire.


Enlisted at Leeds on the 25th of March 1833.

Age: 20 years 4 months.

Height: 5' 6".

Trade: Clothier.

Features: Fresh complexion. Grey eyes. Brown hair.


From Private to Corporal: 8th of September 1833.

Reduced to Private by a Regimental Court-martial on the 3rd of March 1834.

Embarked for India on the 20th of June 1836.

From Private to Corporal: 25th of August 1839.

Reduced to Private by a Regimental Court-martial on the 5th of March 1841.

1851 Census

Leith South, Midlothian.

Jacob Hemmingway, 35, Soldier 13th Light Dragoons.

Jane Hemmingway, 30.

Mary Ann Hemmingway, 2 months.

At Scutari on the 15th of January 1854 and to England on 17th of February 1855.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Newbridge on the 6th of May 1857:

"Unfit for further service — Labours under chronic rheumatism — the result of long service and exposure, both at home and in the field, but not likely to interfere with his ability to earn his livelihood. He was invalided to England from Scutari on the 7th of January 1855."
(Another source states that it was the 17th of February 1855.)

Served 24 years 135 days. In Turkey and the Crimea: 1 year. East Indies: 4 years.

Conduct: "good". In possession of four Good Conduct badges.

Awarded a pension of 1/0d. per day.

Next of kin (in 1854): Wife, Jane Hemmingway, living at No. 5 Roden Place, Dundalk, Ireland. But he also sent money to her from the Crimea when at Joselyn Street, Manchester.


Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Balaclava, Inkerman, Sebastopol and the Turkish medal.


Life after service

To live in Dewsbury after discharge, but he was living in Halifax in 1865.

Jacob Hemmingway 59, widower, Blanket Weaver, born Earlheaton.

Three daughters, aged 14 — 20 years, and a granddaughter are also shown.
