Birth & early life

Born c.1835.


Enlisted at Brighton on the 28th of December 1854.

Age: 19.

Height:, 5' 7".

Trade: Smith.


Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 3rd of August 1855.

Transferred to the 17th Lancers at Newbridge on the 31st of August 1857. Regtl. No. 95.

He is named as "Edward" Herriot on some 17th Lancer muster rolls.

Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S.S. "Great Britain" on the 8th of October 1857.

In action against the rebels at Zeerapore on the 29th of December 1858 and at Baroda on the 1st of January 1859.

From Pte. to Shoeing-Smith. 9th of May 1862.

Prisoner, and tried by a Regimental Court-martial on the 1st of July 1864, being "Derated" to Pte.

Transferred to the 7th Hussars (in India) on the 30th of November 1864. Regtl. No. 883.

Embarked for England on the 26th of February 1866.

Discharge & pension

Discharged, "time expired", from Canterbury on the 27th of December 1866.


Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol and the Turkish medal.

Mutiny medal without clasp.
