1515, Private Henry JEANS — 17th Lancers

Birth & early life

Born at Stalbridge, Dorset, and baptised there on the 26th of June 1826, the son of David and Hannah Jeans. His father had married Anna Oliver at Stalbridge on the 25th of September 1823.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Cork on the 3rd of February 1855.

Age: 28.

Height: 5' 9".

Trade: Shoe-maker.

(In view of his age, he had most probably already served in the Army before this.)

Features: Sallow complexion. Grey eyes. Dk. brown hair.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 20th of June 1855.

Was Brigade Orderly in March of 1856.

The muster rolls for the July-September 1858 period show him as "On Field Service" from September.

Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S.S. "Great Britain" on the 8th of October 1857.

Returned to England from India on the 4th of February 1861.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Chatham Invalid Depot on the 2nd of July 1861:

"Unfit for further service. Suffers from softening of the palate and general debility, Several pieces of bone have come away from the nose. The origin of this disease appears to have been syphilis. Not aggravated by liquor."

Served 5 years 333 days.

Conduct: "good".

Not in possession of any Good Conduct badges.

Aged 35 years 7 months on discharge.

Awarded a pension of 7d. per day for one year.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.

Can find no trace on the Mutiny medal roll.

Commemorations

To live c/o. Mrs. Jeans, Stalbridge, Dorset on discharge.

Death & burial

[RM: The GRO records show Henry Jeans dying, aged 40, in the Sturminster district, Dorset (encompassing Stalbridge) in the March quarter of 1866.]
