Birth & early life

Born at Brighton, Sussex, c.1830.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Brighton on the 24th of June 1854.

Age: 24.

Height: 5' 10".

Trade: Shoemaker.

Service

Embarked for the Crimea on the 28th of May 1855 and joined the regiment on the 20th of June.

From Private to Corporal: 18th of April 1856:

"Absent," 1-15 of April. Tried by a Regimental Court-martial and reduced to Private on the 16th of April 1857.

Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S.S. "Great Britain" on the 8th of October 1851.

The musters for July-September of 1858 show him as being "On Field Service" during the whole of this period.

Served in the field at Rajghur and Mungrowlee with Captain William Gordon.

From Private to Corporal: 31st of July 1860.

Corporal to Sergeant: 7th of July 1862.

Reduced to Private by a Regimental Court-martial for "being drunk in camp", on the 10th of May 1865.

From Private to Corporal: 30th of August 1865.

Re-engaged for a further 12 years service at Aldershot on the 17th of April 1866.

Discharge & pension

Discharged, "invalided." from Shorncliffe on the 15th of October 1867, as:

"Unfit for further service. Has chronic hepatitis. Caught a severe cold in June of 1866. Suffers from weakness and general ill-health and has constant pain in his loins. Disease will materially affect his earning a livelihood. Not aggravated by vice or mis-conduct."

Served 13 years 116 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 1 year,

Aged 37 years 8 months on discharge.

Conduct: "very good".

In possession of three Good Conduct badges.

Three times entered in the Regimental Defaulters' book. Three times tried by Court-martial.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.

Mutiny medal without clasp.

Commemorations

Life after service

To live at No. 7, Circus Street, Brighton on discharge.

Death & burial

Died in the Brighton Pension District on the 21st of January 1869.

Letter from the War Office, no date, March 1870: "Man dead."

Further information

He had previously served in the Royal Sussex Light Infantry Militia from the 1st of February 1853.
