Birth & early life

Born in London, c.1829.

He was christened as Gustavus Nathaniel Jones at St. Saviour's Church, Southwark, on the 18th of October 1829, the son of James and Mary Jones.

Enlistment

Enlisted at London on the 31st of March 1848.

Age: 19.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: Labourer.

Service

Horse Guards,

14th June 1852.

Sir, — I have to acknowledge the receipt of your recommendation, dated ultimo. that a furlough be granted to Private Gustavus Jones, of the 4th Light Dragoons on a certificate of the surgeon, Dr. Richmond on account of the his ill state of health.

Having referred the medical papers of this man to the Superintendent of the Army Medical Department, I have, at the Commander-in--Chief's command, to annex a copy of a letter for your information which I have received from Dr. Smith in reply and to intimate to you that under the circumstances his Grace has not deemed it expedient to grant the furlough solicited,

At Scutari from the 4th of April — 11th of May 1855.

"Absent" from the 10th of July — 31st of August 1857 and in a Military Prison from the 1-23 of September.

Discharged, "time expired", from Manchester on the 29th of June 1860.

Served 12 years 15 days.

Conduct: "good".

In possession of two Good Conduct badges.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Balaclava, Inkerman and Sebastopol.
