Tried by a General Court-martial at Nottingham Barracks on the 8th of July 1853 for
(1) Having on the 24th of June 1853, when leaving "evening stables," wilfully struck Private John Levick, 8th Hussars.
(2) On being ordered to be confined, broke away from his escort, and attempted to strike Troop Sergeant Major Marriot, whilst in the execution of his duty.
(3) On the morning of the 25th of July 1853 having made improper remarks when informed by his commanding officer, Lieutenant-Colonel F.G. Shewell, that he would be tried by a District Court-martial on the above charges by saying that a District Court-martial will not do for him and "I will have a General Court-martial and I will not soldier any more under T.S.M. Marriot. I will shoot him, when I come out," — or words to that effect.
He was found "Guilty " on all charges, and "taking into account his previous conduct," was sentenced to imprisonment, with hard labour, for 12 lunar months.
Embarked for the Crimea aboard the H.T. "Shooting Star "on the 15th of April 1854.
"Confined" from the 6th of January 1855.
Tried by a District Court-martial on the 9th of January 1855 for "quitting his post, and habitual drunkenness".
Sentenced to receive 50 lashes, given three months' imprisonment with hard labour, and to lose 1d. per day for two years."
Tried by a District Court-martial on the 7th of August 1855 for "being drunk on the line of march, absence from guard-mounting and using abusive language to a superior officer. "
Sentenced to 50 lashes.
Tried by a District Court-martial at Camp Devna on the 2nd of October 1855 for "Violence to a superior officer," and given 50 lashes.
Discharged, "in consequence of the Reduction of the Regiment and being of a bad character," from Dundalk on the 4th of November 1856.

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Balaclava, Inkerman and Sebastopol.
