1569, Private John KNIGHT — 8th Hussars

Birth & early life

Born at Aston, Birmingham.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Warwick on the 8th of January 1855.

Age: 20.

Height: 5' 8".

Trade: Bricklayer.

Appearance: Fresh complexion. Grey eyes. Lt. brown hair.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 15th of June 1855.

He is shown on a nominal roll of men of the regiment at the Cavalry Depot, Scutari, made out on the 9th of November 1855, as being On Duty there from the 4th of November.

Rejoined the regiment on the 14th of November.

Returned to England aboard the "Norman" on the 15th of May 1856.

He is not shown in the October-December Quarter of 1856 muster rolls. A pencilled note at the bottom of the page shows his name, number, and "why dis-continued."

He was a transfer to the 2nd Battalion of the Military Train on the 1st of January 1857. Regimental No. 209.

Transferred to the 5th Battalion on the 1st of April 1857.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Dublin on the 5th of August 1857.

"Has Opthalma [ophthalmia?] of the right eye caused by exposure to cold when on service in the Crimea. The disease was not prevalent at the time. Left eye is sound and right eye now only slightly affected."

Served 2 years 7 months.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 11 months.

Conduct: "good". Not in possession of any Good Conduct badges,

To live at Aston, Birmingham, after discharge.

Awarded a pension of 6d. per day for 6 months, "final."

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean medal with one clasp.

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol.

Not recorded by Lummis and Wynn.
