1457, Private Henry LAWES — 11th Hussars

Birth & early life

Born at Bray, near Maidenhead, Berkshire, c.1830, and baptised at Bray Parish Church on the 5th of September 1830, the son of Hugh Lawes, a tailor, and his wife. Eliza.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Hounslow on the 22nd of November 1849.

Age: 19.

Height: 5'.0". [?]

Trade: Blacksmith.

Appearance: Fresh complexion. Blue eyes. Brown hair.

Service

1851 Census

Pockthorpe Cavalry Barracks, Norwich.

Harry [sic] Lawes, aged 20, unmarried, Private, Soldier, born Bray, Berks.

At Scutari General Depot from the 7th and sent to Varna on the 29th of August 1854.

Balaclava period muster roll states. "In Hospital".

Invalided to Chatham from the Crimea on the 19th of April 1856.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Chatham Invalid Depot on the 22nd of July 1856.

"Unfit for further service. Is unable to walk without a crutched stick and suffers a great deal from pain in the left hip. There is also a wasting on that side and a very limited action of the joint. The result of a severe injury — a horse falling on him whilst he was shoeing it — he states that, "having hold of the horse's foot it sprang to one side and he was dragged with it, and then the horse fell on him." This is by his own statement. The accident happened on the 7th of March 1856."

Served 6 years 155 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 2 years.

Conduct: "good". Has no Good Conduct badges other than it appears he is entitled to one, according to the detailed statement of his service on the second page of his documents, but his defaulter's sheet has not been received from the Crimea.

He was tried by a Regimental Court-martial for "absence" on the 9th of March 1850.

Aged 25 years 10 months on discharge.

Granted a pension of 6d. per day for two years.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for the Alma, Inkerman and Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal.

Life after service

To live in Maidenhead after discharge, but he was living in the West London Pension District in 1858.
