Death registration
The death of a man of this name, aged 42, is recorded in the October Quarter of 1866 in Derby.
He is shown in the muster rolls of the period as being with the Depot Troop of the 11th Hussars at the Canterbury Cavalry Depot and there is nothing to indicate why he was recorded as dying at Derby — e.g. there is no record of his having been sent there on temporary duty.
He left £26/11/2d in his "credits" and £26/18/5d in his Savings Bank account, this money being paid over to his wife.
Next-of-kin (in 1854): Wife, Matilda Lazenby.
Matilda Lazenby was at the Depot at the time of his death and is shown as having been granted a travel warrant to travel from Canterbury to York. No children were recorded in the family at this time.

Considerable extra Census information for 1851, 1871-1911, and details of numerous registrations of births, deaths and marriages, kindly provided by Chris Poole. He undertook this detailed study after the EJBA received an email in January 2013 from Don Bruce, a grandson of Charles Leigh Bruce (and hence a great-great-grandson of Richard Lazenby), which included a rather intriguing connection:
"It had always been said that he [Richard Lazenby] was a relation if for no other reason than my grandmother had a clock presented to him by the officers (for some act of bravery) during the war. The clock no longer exists (woodworm) but the silver plaque was taken back to Rhodesia by my Uncle — Stanley Lazenby Bruce. He has now died but I am hoping to be able to trace my cousin (contact lost some years ago) who I hope still has it."
In April 2013 Don Bruce, having successfully contacted his cousin, was able to send a photograph of the clock plaque, apparently in 1867 .
The inscription reads:
"PRESENTED BY THE
non-commissioned officers of
the 11th Hussars to
SRGT RICHARD LAZENBY
in token of respect, 1867."
Don Bruce, who sent the photograph, writes that the date seems slightly odd, since Richard Lazenby had died the previous year. If it does indeed say "1867" (and not the visually similar 1861), it is possible the clock was actually presented to a relation, possibly his wife.
