932, Private John LAVERY — 17th Lancers

Birth & early life

Born c.1826.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Birmingham on the 5th of December 1847.

Age: 21.

Height: 5' 8".

Trade: None shown.

Service

Left sick on board ship on the 17th of September 1854, when the regiment arrived in the Crimea and was sent to Scutari.

The muster rolls for the General Depot at Scutari show him as being there from the 22nd of September and sent to rejoin the regiment on the 3rd of October 1854. The October-December quarter muster roll shows him as being on the strength of the regiment (with no indication of just when he rejoined from Scutari Hospital) and a similar indication for January-March.

[EJB: Lummis and Wynn state that he was at Scutari from the 26th of October 1854 — 11th of May 1855, but if that was so how could he have been entitled to the clasp for Inkerman? He is not shown on the Balaclava clasp roll, but equally there is nothing to show that he was not available for duty on that particular day.]

Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S.S. "Great Britain" on the 8th of October 1858 and arriving at Bombay on the 19th of December.

The muster rolls for the July-September 1858 period show him as being "On Field Service" from September of that period.

In action against the rebels at Zeerapore on the 29th of February 1859 and at Baroda on the 1st of January 1859.

On passage to England aboard the "John Temperly" on the 11th of April 1860, arriving at Chatham Invalid Depot on the 21st of August. From here he went to the Cavalry Depot at Maidstone on the 4th of September 1860.

Discharge & pension

Discharged, "time expired", from Maidstone on the 12th of September 1860. Served 12 years 286 days.

Conduct: "good".

Not in possession of any Good Conduct badges.

Travelled to Birmingham after discharge.
