Birth & early life

Born c.1835.

Enlistment

Enlisted at London on the 7th of February 1854.

Age: 19.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: None shown.

Service

Sent to the Depot at Brighton on the 19th of April 1854, sent to the Crimea from the Depot, and embarking on the 24th of June as one of a party of seven, joined the regiment at Varna on the 13th of August.

Left on board ship from the 16th of September, at Scutari from the 26th and sent to rejoin the regiment on the 3rd of October 1854.

Taken prisoner of war at Balaclava. The muster roll for the period states. "Died whilst a prisoner of war, date not known."

No next of kin are shown. Left £1/6/8d. in his "credits" and £1/10/0d in the Regimental Savings Bank.

In a letter written to Thomas Morley by James Wightman in March of 1889, he said, "Lyle [sic] died, right leg amputated..."

[EJB: His surname is shown as "Liles" in the muster rolls from his enlistment through to the last entry in these for him, but his name could be spelt as "Lyles" on his medal as this is how his name is spelt on the Balaclava clasp roll.]
