Surgeon Hampden Hugh MASSEY — 17th Lancers

Birth & early life

Born in Cork, Ireland, on the 4th of April 1820.

Obtained his B.A. in 1843, M.D. (Dublin) in 1843, and was later Licentiate of the Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland.

Service

Assistant-Surgeon in the 31st Foot: 22nd of November 1844.

Assistant-Surgeon in the 4th Light Dragoons: 28th of February 1851.

On the 20th of May 1851, at St. Peter's Church, Dublin, he married Mary Rebecca, daughter of E.S Irwin, Esq., the ceremony being performed by the Reverend W. Marrake.

Staff-Surgeon (Staff): 28th of March 1854.

Staff-Surgeon in the 17th Lancers: 9th of May 1854.

Staff-Surgeon in the 2nd Dragoon Guards: 9th of January 1857.

Staff-Surgeon (Staff): 9th of February 1854.

Surgeon-Major (Staff): 22nd of November 1864.

Deputy Surgeon General, Army Medical Department, and Head of the Sanitary Branch at the War Office: 9th of March 1867.

Campaign service

Doctor Massey served with the 31st Regiment towards the close of the Sutlej campaign in 1846. Served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 with the 17th Lancers, including the affairs of the Bulganak and MacKenzie's Farm, the battles of the Alma, Balaclava, Inkerman, the Tchernyna, and the Siege and fall of Sebastopol. (Medal and four Clasps, 5th Class Order of the Medjidie and the Turkish Medal.)

Served with the 2nd Dragoon Guards during the Indian Mutiny campaign of 1857-58, including the Siege and capture of Lucknow, actions of Koorsee and the Trans-Gogra, and affairs at Bungaon. (Medal and Clasp.)

Recommended for promotion when in the Crimea by Sir William Codrington and for the Legion of Honour by Lord Cardigan. Was principal Medical Officer to Brigadier-General Parke's column during the Oude campaign. Granted the Good Service Reward with an annuity of £50 on retirement.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Balaclava, Inkerman and Sebastopol, the Turkish medal, Order of the Medjidie, 5th Class, and the Mutiny medal with clasp for Lucknow.

Death & burial

Died at Northwood Lodge, Bournemouth, Hampshire, on the 27th of September 1895 at the age of 75 years.

Mary Rebecca Massy [sic], 67, December Quarter 1895, Christchurch.

He was buried in Grave No. E4395 in Wimbourne Road Cemetery, Bournemouth. The erected memorial stone bears the inscription:

"Sacred to the memory of Surgeon General Hampden Hugh Massey, M.D. C.B., who died at Bournemouth, September 27th 1895 and of Mary Rebecca, his wife, who died at Bournemouth, November 25th 1895, aged 67 years."

[The latter is buried alongside her husband.]

In his will he left his estate of £3,168 to his only son, Hampden Hugh Massey, then a Captain in the Royal Engineers. His son was later killed in action at the Upper Tulega (Spion Kop) in South Africa, while personally superintending the making of entrenchments. He was a Major at this time, and had already been twice mentioned in despatches.
