Enlisted at Liverpool on the 16th of May 1854.

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 14th of July 1855.
He is shown on a nominal roll of men of the regiment at the Cavalry Depot, Scutari, made out on the 9th of November 1855, as being On Duty there from the 4th of November.
From Private to Corporal: 19th of September 1857.
Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S.S. "Great Britain" on the 8th of October 1857.
Corporal to Sergeant: 3rd of July 1859.
Tried by a Regimental Court-martial on the 7th of May 1863 for "being drunk on duty." Given 50 lashes and reduced to Private.
Discharged from Aldershot on the 19th of June 1866, as:
"Unfit for further service. Varix. Occurred in the service and resulting from riding. The knees of both legs are diseased and prevent him from riding. In all other respects he is perfectly able to gain his livelihood."
Served 12 years 6 days.
In Turkey and the Crimea: 6 months
In India: 6 years.
Conduct: "good". Not in possession of any Good Conduct badges.
Six times entered in the Regimental Defaulters' book. Once tried by Court-martial.
Aged 31 years on discharge.
Awarded a pension of 6d. per day.
To live at No. 15 Court Back, Grafton Street, Liverpool, but he was living in Chester in 1875.
1881 Census
The 1881 Census shows him as living at No. 41 Princes Street, Wigan, a Rope Maker, aged 44, born in Manchester [sic], with his wife, Elizabeth, aged 32 and born in Wigan. There were six children shown, their ages ranging from 13 to 1 year, the eldest, a boy, being a Grocers Assistant.
Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol.
Mutiny medal with clasp for Central India.
Served at Kotah and Gwalior.
